IGOODIA DOMINATES PERFORMANCE CRUISER I AT ANTIGUA RACE WEEK

Antigua, W.I. May 4, 2003 - Milt Baehr’s Jeanneau 52.2, Igoodia, almost ran the table, scoring 4 dominate first places and one fourth place, to win the Performance Cruiser I class and “Big Banana Trophy” at Antigua Sailing Week. Held April 27th through May 3rd, 2003, Antigua Sailing Week is considered one of the world’s most prestigious international regattas. Sailing to the starting line were 186 boats representing 29 countries.

The team consisted of great sailors from the British Virgin Islands and United States. Milt Baehr from Incline Village, NV was skipper and helmsman. Steve Harrison from Newport, RI was tactician and after guy. Mark Plaxton from the BVI handled main and spinnaker trim. On the bow was Ainsley Randle from Honolulu, HI. Laura Parent, from Newport, RI, provided genoa trim. Collin Rathbun, a BVI belonger, served as mast man and jib tailor. Jan Saale from Discovery Bay, CA handled main tail, fore guy as well a spinnaker packing. Lori Molatta from Atlanta, GA also handled spinnaker packing and sandwich trim. From the BVI was O’Dell Smith, grinding the spinnaker and genoa. Steven Berlin and Harold Kazanjian, both from Newburyport, MA worked middle deck.

The Igoodia Crew at Prize Giving

Igoodia concluded her Caribbean 2003 campaign with her first victory.. She finished 2nd at the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta, 3rd at the St. Thomas Rolex Cup and 2nd at the BVI Spring Regatta. Milt Baehr, Igoodia’s skipper recalls; “Throughout the whole season we continued to learn more about the boat and the team kept getting better and better. At Antigua we were carrying 1.5 knots more of boat speed through our tacks then we did in St. Maarten. Our crew work on spinnaker sets, jibes and takedowns was almost flawless.”

As the regatta progressed, Team Igoodia’s dominance continued to increase. The first race to Dickenson Bay saw Igoodia defeating 2nd place Hansa, the X-612 Boat from Germany, by over four minutes. Igoodia’’s margin over Hansa increased to 5.5 minutes in the Jolly Harbour race. In the third race, Jolly to Falmouth Harbour Igoodia was fouled at the start by Bank Von Bremen, who was later penalized after protest. Later in the race the head of the genoa blew, leading to the only blemish (4th) in an almost perfect regatta.

“The sail was repaired during our lay day and the crew got a most deserved rest. We were a little discouraged but were still tied for 1st place with Hansa. Before the start of the fourth race we had problems with the head stay, however these were remedied just in time for our signal.” says Milt Baehr. “Live Fast – Sail Faster had been Team Igoodia’s slogan. Now it was time the additional motto to kick in; PEACE, LOVE AND BOAT SPEED.” recalls mainsail trimmer Mark Plaxton. In the 4th South Coast race Igoodia defeated the 2nd place Hansa by over 8 minutes. In the final Ocean Race Igoodia’s margin over the 2nd place Yocahu was over 10 minutes.

Close Reach in the Dickenson Bay Race

“This year the Performance Cruiser Fleet standings were heavily weighted towards smaller division II boats. Igoodia was the only Division I boat in the top standings, tying for 2nd (Hansa placed 8th).  We were very pleased with our performance this season and are looking forward to continuing our winning ways in our Caribbean 2004 campaign.” said tactician Steve Harrison. “Igoodia will now make her way north for the summer enjoying some relaxing cruising in New England. After all, she is a cruising boat.”
